چکیده

We analyze screw, edge and mixed screw-edge dislocations in monochromatic light waves. Methods for the experimental dete~nation of the topological charge value and helicity of screw dislocations are elaborated. By use of computer-synthesized binary gratings waves with edge and mixed screw-edge disl~ations were obtained and studied ~xpe~mentally. The transformation of a mixed screw-edge distocation into a single screw disl~ation was observed and explained.

Matter-wave soliton control in optical lattices with topological dislocations

We address the concept of guiding and transporting matter-wave solitons along the channels of optical lattices made by interference patterns of beams containing topological wavefront dislocations. The local lattice distortions that occur around the dislocations cause solitons to move along reconfigurable paths, a phenomenon that may be used for controlled all-optical manipulation of Bose-Einste...

Branch point detection and correction using the branch point potential method

Branch points have been shown to cause problems for adaptive optics (AO) systems which attempt to correct for atmospheric distortion over mid-to-long range horizontal paths. Where branch points (or singularities) occur, the phase of the optical wavefront is undefined and cannot be reconstructed by conventional wavefront reconstruction techniques. Branch points occur in pairs of opposite sign (o...

Third-order aberration analysis of tilted-pupil optical systems∗

The aberration field of an optical system with a tilted pupil is explored through expanding the vector expressions of the third-order wavefront aberrations. First, the vector forms of the wavefront aberrations are modified to obtain the aberration expressions with the pupil tilted; full field displays of coma and astigmatism in this situation are given. Then, the third-order aberration formulas...

Characterization of dielectric spheres by spiral imaging.

We study the spiral spectra scattered off transparent dielectric spheres when probed by different Laguerre-Gaussian light beams, carrying nested topological wavefront dislocations. We show that such scattering data may be employed to determine geometrical properties of the spheres, such as their position. The technique is a generalization of standard Mie scattering, and it can be extended to st...

Detection of phase singularities with a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor.

While adaptive optical systems are able to remove moderate wavefront distortions in scintillated optical beams, phase singularities that appear in strongly scintillated beams can severely degrade the performance of such an adaptive optical system. Therefore the detection of these phase singularities is an important aspect of strong-scintillation adaptive optics. We investigate the detection of ...
